A Glimpse of Autumn At Simmers-Young Park

Autumn 2012 officially begins September 22nd, yet already Polk County is reveling in its forthcoming-arrival! Enjoy the Autumn colors this week at Simmers-Young Park in Winter Haven!

"Change is a measure of time and, in the Autumn, time seems speeded up.
What was is not and never again will be; what is is change."
~Edwin Way Teale~

"Delicious Autumn! My very soul is wedded to it
and if I were a bird, I would fly about the earth
seeking the successive Autumns"
~George Eliot~

"A tangerine and russet cascade of kaleidoscopic leaves, creates a tapestry of Autumn magic
upon the emerald carpet of fading summer"
~Judith A. Lindberg~

~Albert Camus~

"For man, Autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad"

The ghosts of her departed leaves.
The ground is hard, as hard as stone.
The year is old, the birds are flown"

Lake Ned Sunrise, Winter Haven, New Years Day, January 1, 2012

It was too irresistible to not catch the first sunrise of the new year, so I journeyed to Lake Ned on Cypress Gardens Rd in Winter Haven.

Address: 231 Lake Ned Road, Cypress Gardens, Florida

I arrived at sunrise 7:18 am and was not disappointed at the view awaiting me.

During my 45 minutes at Lake Ned, I observed Ibis

Sandhill Cranes flying overhead with their unique, beautiful trumpeting

Lake Ned has a nice setting for family picnics, BBQ's and children's recreation

If you enjoy birdlife, sunrises and sunsets or just sitting with your Honey,
Lake Ned is a nice serene location to migrate to.

If you like to recreate on the water, Lake Ned has a boat ramp at this location.

There's an activity for all ages at Lake Ned.

Lake Ned seems a suitable place for all creatures and not only humans.
There is sufficient green space for children AND dogs to play and roam
then afterwards, benches provide a nice place to sit, meditate and soak up the Polk County sun :)

Celebrating the 1st Day of Winter 2011 @ Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland

In Polk County I can always find a reason to explore a new trail or walk a familiar park, however today, December 22, 2011 - the first day of Winter, warranted an intentional outing to investigate something with mystique and intrigue. For me, that was to see if the brown pelicans were back at Circle B Bar Reserve.

It was January 2011 when I first discovered the hundreds that would fly over Wading Bird Way and into the sunset at Circle B Bar Reserve. It was mesmerizing and it brought me back night after night. I couldn't get my fill.

Here's all that I saw while celebrating today:

The windmill is opposite the sign

Ibis Convention (kidding)

All Summer, this marsh was filled with lush, green plantlife; so much so that you could barely see any water.

There were hundreds of American Coots making a great commotion

The beautiful Blue Heron

This is wonderfully helpful in identifying the birds here

I observed several flocks of Sandhill Cranes flying West at Sunset.
Have you ever heard them trumpeting? Beautiful!

And last but not least, one of the great things about Florida Winters,
you can most likely still wear your short sleeves and capris!
